Revalidation requirements: Practice hours

As part of your revalidation you need to be able to show you have completed a minimum number of practice hours in the three years preceding the date of your application for renewal of your registration.

The box below details the minimum total practice hours required for each type of registration.

 Registration

 Minimum total practice hours required

 Nurse
 450
 Nursing Associate
 450
 Midwife
 450
 Nurse and SCPHN  450
 Midwife and SCPHN
 450
Nurse and Midwife (including Nurse/SCPHN and Midwife/SCHPN)  900

Only hours that are relevant to your nursing, nursing associate or midwifery practice contribute towards meeting the practice hour requirement. Your practice hours relate to your specific scope of practice and are not limited to direct patient care.

For some roles, practice will include non-clinical work such as research, policy, education or management, which also meets revalidation requirements.

You should maintain a record of the practice hours you have completed in your portfolio, with information on the type and hours of practice and evidence of hours completed. The NMC has provided a template for you to record this.

Dual/Multiple registrations

The NMC has provided further support and guidance for dual registrants regarding the management and recording of the 900 practice hours.

Working abroad

The NMC has provided further support and guidance for those registrants who are working or have worked abroad in their registration period.
